Commissions

Commissioning a work of art is a special collaboration process between myself and you as my client. You may already have an idea or a vision for the perfect painting or you may want my help to help further develop your idea. It’s an exciting process to commission a piece of art that is one of a kind and special to you.

I would love to discuss the details of the piece you have envisioned! Please feel free to contact me with any questions about commissioning a painting. I look forward to creating something beautiful for you!

  • An initial email consultation explores your vision for the piece. At this point we will discuss the details of what you have in mind regarding subject matter, medium, style and size. From there I will be able to provide you with an estimate.
  • Once a final composition is agreed upon, an estimated timeline and payment schedule is determined.
  • A 50% non-refundable installment is required prior to starting the painting process.
  • Upon completion and approval, the final installment plus shipping costs are due in advance of shipping the painting
  • Being a bit of a purist I prefer to work from my own reference photos.  Whenever possible I will work with you to schedule a photo shoot if required.  When this is not possible, I will review the reference material you provide – from there we work together to develop our plan on how to make your painting a reality. Quite often I may have images that will fit with your vision although I am always open to exploring any photos you may like to provide.
  • I create work that typically has a blank background, creating contemporary images allowing the negative space to feature the image represented.  I maintain full artistic license of choosing the background, as it is important to the feel of the final piece .
  • It is important for me that any commissions that I take on represent my distinct style and blends into my body of work.  I have to assume you are approaching me because you love my existing work.
  • There are no limits to the potential size and dimensions of the piece. I can work anywhere from 8x 10” up to 40”x40”(and beyond) in any variety of dimensions that best fit your vision and budget.
  • Shipping is additional and will be determined when the piece is packed, measured, and weighed. The price will vary depending on the size and weight and final destination. I can provide an options on shipping to review with you in advance. I will be sure to find the best rates possible while also ensuring your piece is safely packed.

How is it July already?

How is it July already?

I am in shock at how fast this year is going. Please summer, won’t you slow down just a little for us?

The moods of Lac Cameron, PQ

We travelled to Ontario and then to Quebec to visit with our family recently and to help build a deck at a lakeside cottage. The lake, of course, is incredibly beautiful and ever changing.  I did not paint on days when we had torrential rains (well, maybe before the rain started) and high winds.  But I never really thought that high temperatures would also be a deterrent. Biting bugs I understand and regularly hide form them. The drive up was challenging.  So fricken long.  And our dog Trixie gets crazy anxiety in the car.  We have medication from the vet for her to help calm the poor doggie down.  Unfortunately it had little effect.  She would not lie down at all the entire trip.  The poor thing was panting like a train the whole way up. Made the drive less pleasant and we felt so bad for her.

Plein Air painting at the lake

I anticipated painting at least one or two a day.  It was interesting though.  Once the sun returned the lake actually looked the same each day.  Same colours.  Same clouds.  Same view to paint. So I decided to paint at various times of the day to see if I could get more variety.

In my first painting the heavy clouds were moving in quickly and I knew I had to concentrate and paint fast. The sky was getting darker by the minute. I literally tossed the painting into the cottage as the downpour started.

The second painting was a perfect summer day with big, fluffy, friendly clouds. This was a high contrast kind of day. Clouds were just starting to form on the horizon. The day was to be 28 degrees with high humidity. Perfect bug weather! I am very happy with this painting – the foliage on the land is working very well. I am not too itchy at this point!

And the third painting day was of an idyllic sort of summer day. Just the right amount of sunshine, fluffy clouds and summer breezes – that is, until the heat and humidity got to me. Which brings me back to the fact that there is no real perfect painting day – you just have to make it yours! Fresh off the easel I’ve been somewhat busy in my studio as well with a number of paintings on the easel. Drama in the Sky is available by clicking on the image link. Moody Moments has been sold and is proudly hanging in it’s new home

FAQ’s

Where do you find inspiration? Do you paint from photographs?

I normally only paint what I have personally experienced – whether it be from Plein Air adventuring or from photographing a subject that speaks to me. My work is based upon my own observations and natural curiosity.

I often will reference a number of my own images when designing and creating a painting.

Paintings are created in stages. Often my work has to dry for several days between the layers. I normally have several pieces in various stages and alternate which ones I work on. Typically it may take me from a month to five months to complete a painting.

Yes. Payment plans are a great option to acquire original artwork within a set budget. We can work together create a payment schedule to enable you to purchase your painting over 3 to 6 months – whatever makes sense to you. Payments are non-refundable.

It is important to understand that as the creator of the work that I retain all rights to all artwork I create. This includes the image of sold and commissioned original paintings.

This means that as the artist I retain the right to reproduce any artwork in any form unless the collector has purchased the full or partial rights to the artwork (in addition to purchasing the original). To discuss this purchasing option contact me.  As a collector or purchaser of my painting you may not reproduce the artwork in any way without written permission. The Artwork, before or after a sale, may not be photographed, sketched, painted, added in part or in whole to any other artwork, or reproduced in any manner whatsoever without the express written consent of the Artist.

Giclee Reproductions?

Giclees are printed using water based inks and are available on three non toxic high quality materials and may be printed on either flat or stretched canvas or on specialty papers.

I offer prints of only a select few paintings. My original paintings have been photographed to ensure reproduction accuracy is high quality and as close to the original as possible.

You may also request a print of a painting you love – I require a few days to be able to provide a quote for you. Special requests may take up to three weeks for fulfillment.

Images may be slight cropping from the edges of the original image to fit certain standard sizes for more convenient framing options.
