Vigilance, osprey painting in oil

This elegant osprey had me spellbound as we watched it fly from the nest, around the bay and back. Over and over. I could not get over how majestic it was sitting high in its nest, being totally observant and on guard. Vigilance! So, I had to paint it!

Summer sky

This was a warm summers day with not a cloud in the sky. Warm breezes blowing. We were sitting outside at a restaurant by the edge of a little bay on Prince Edward Island just savouring the day. There was a nesting platform very close to where we were sitting – only I spent most of the time on my feet, with my camera fixed on this fella getting as many shots as possible. Wound up with a lot of over exposed photos as I was shooting straight up at the sky. Also managed to get a number of good photos as well. What really stood out for me was the incredible colour of the sky. Soft cobalt blue.

The eyes have it

I googled the spiritual meaning of seeing an osprey – found this great description:

The Osprey is a symbol of true power, with mastery over the sea, air and land. It is a true hunter, with speed, agility, power and precision. It is a symbol of keen vision, seeing its prey clearly and not being blinded by the sun as it dives towards its target.

I started this painting with the eyes as I do with most works. I know they have to be right or you may as well start over. I have a little time lapse video that I wanted to share to show you the little tiny brushes I used while painting the eyes, but Square Space will not let me.

Until next time, stay safe
