Inquisitive and The Saucy One

I have been painting blackbirds this week. I know them well and almost always come back to them after I complete a major or complex piece. “Inquisitive” is a 10×12” oil painting of a rather curious corvid looking at me from many angles. I love how the sun reflects and illuminates their feathers. So many colours. They are really quite remarkable. Their iradescendent feathers remind me of iron ore with all the colours and facets – you may be able to tell that my father was a rock hound when I was growing up and so I know a bit about rocks

The Saucy One

This rather talkative blackbird seemed to have a lot to say. I was able to take so many reference photos as he hobbled along beside me. He really made me laugh as I imagined him trying to tell me all sorts of stories. At the end of the day, I am pretty sure that he was really begging for food and not really interested in having engaging conversations with me. He was loudly talking (squawking?) back to me – hence The Saucy One.
