We had a wonderful opportunity to vacation on a beach in PEI this past week. We love the entire island but have to admit, the area around Malpeque and Thunder Cove Beach is extradinorary. The plan was really to enjoy the beach and spend as much time there as possible. I brought my water mixable oils and my watercolours in hope of finding time to paint. And paint we did. My good friend RoseMary and I sat on the beach and painted with our watercolours.
Not a cloud in the sky
When I first thought about the opportunity to paint on the beach I made the decision that I want to focus on the sky and the water. The first two days were classic beach days. Amazing blue sky and water. Summer perfection. No clouds to speak of. But did you know that watercolours were meant for painting skies? I looked straight our and painted what was directly in front of me.

By Wednesday the weather was beginning to change. The water took on a greenish and teal hue and there were clouds forming. The wind was starting to pick up and the waves got interesting. They were moving faster and with more power. Beginning to feel like late summer.
Chilly winds
Thursday presented us with heavy surf, high winds and unpredictable weather. An absolutely magical day. Maybe a little challenging to paint but I managed. No easel in this weather! I am really happy with this painting. The clouds were moving and changing so fast that by the time i figured out what to do…poof…they were gone or completely different. This is now feeling a bit like October! Brrrr. Chilly winds they blow.
I loved the challenge. Had to work fast and give up on any idea of capturing exactly what I saw.
Heaven is a place on earth, actually in Prince Edward Island
This vacation was therapeutic. So grateful for the the Atlantic Provinces Bubble and for good friends. At a time when vacations seemed out of the question due to COVID, we were able to escape to somewhere that is a lot like heaven on earth!
We walked on the beach every day easily getting way more than our 10k steps. Ate well. And got to spend our time with two of our favourite people.
Love your plein air sketches! ….and so jealous that you were able to soak up that gorgeous salt air and beaches. Nothing like the beach!
Thank you so much Carole. Beaches are a favourite
destination for me. I love the air, the smells, the sounds – really everything!
We’ve vacationed at Penderosa Cottages for 9 summers (same area as Thunder Cove). I‘Be share your thought of heaven being a place on Earth since the very first time my toes touched the sand climbing down through the dunes to our beach. Your images fill my heart.
It is such a magical place for sure. We spent every moment possible on the beach – me usually with my camera around my neck in case I saw a bird! I was so happy to be able to paint every day and catch the changing mood of the sky and the water. So happy you like my little watercolour paintings.
