Painting birds is where I started many years ago and where I always come back to. BIrdwatching and photography brings me so much joy that it is only natural that I gravitate to painting them. Forever.
Tidal Trio fresh off the easel
This painting is the second of two images painted as a result of a wonderful day of exploring beaches looking for shorebirds. I love the antics and movements of these sweet little birds. How they run towards the tide looking for juicy morsels and then quickly run back to the shore ahead of the waves. It’s like watching them dance with the tide. I could literally watch them all day long. Of course, I would love to be at a beach all day long as well. Preferably with a little bit of warmth.
Regal Raptors
This rather large oil is a special commissioned piece. I had hoped to get to Nova Scotia earlier this year to photograph them. Covid had other plans and it was not possible. The universe was with me when a friend contacted me and asked if I would consider this special commission. Why yes of course!
I smiled as I worked away on this piece feather by feather. The expression on their faces makes me happy. Their gaze is penetrating and yet displays a comedic persona. Although I wouldn’t want to test to see if they have a sense of humour. This is a large oil 24×30” – I am grateful for the opportunity to be asked to paint them.
Reference photo with special thanks to Patricia Jennings Maguire.
Regal Raptors in progress
I chose not to do an underpainting with this one, instead I opted to just go in and start painting. There is no right or wrong approach. Personal decision. I tend to listen to my intuition when I approach painting. Quite often they “tell” me how I should proceed – I think it is because I have been at this for awhile and my intuition is really strong. Trust your instincts!
Winter beaches
We like to go to the beach whenever possible. We celebrated New Years Day at New River Beach and were amazed how many people had the same idea. The Maritimes are a very special place on our beautiful planet. So blessed to live in this place and have easy access to the magic of the sea. Click through to enjoy
Until next time, may the winds of March be at your back and the sun be on your face…
